SOVEREIGNTYIN THE KITCHEN

a hand illustrated, pocket-size zine that shares tips, tricks and guides for planning and cooking with your community in disaster situations.

Sovereignty in the Kitchen/Soberanía en la Cocina includes meal planning, setting up and running a collective kitchen, a step-by-step guide for growing sprouts in your kitchen, and emergency preparedness (food & water, energy, money and communication).

Soberanía en la Cocina is a collaborative project created by Chef Gabriela Álvarez of Liberation Cuisine and Tina Orlandini of AgitArte with support from Sugeily Rodríguez Lebrón of AgitArte.

The zine’s content was developed at AgitArte's cultural organizing hub, Casa Taller Cangrejera, in Santurce, Puerto Rico and while exchanging with organizers of several other Centros de Apoyo Mutuo (CAMs) which emerged after Hurricane María in 2017. The CAMs organized to meet immediate needs on the ground in communities, in the midst of FEMA's failures and a political catastrophe caused by U.S. colonization.

As our world faces the crisis of COVID-19, we are re-releasing the Soberanía en la Cocina zine digitally for free and now with English translation. We've made a few updates, making this resource more applicable to different emergency scenarios.

Physical copies of the zines are also available in AgitArte's online shop. Proceeds from the zine will go to AgitArte’s ongoing mutual aid and cultural solidarity work.

*Zine covers are hand silkscreened and made to order. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. Covers come in yellow, green, and blue. If you have a preference, please indicate at checkout.
